How Cool Chemistry paved the way for a sustainable future

In just two decades, Christeyns has made extraordinary strides in reducing water and energy consumption in industrial laundries. An impressive reduction from 10 litres to less than 3 litres of fresh water per kg of linen has been achieved. Additionally, energy consumption has been reduced from 0,65 kWh to less than 0,15 kWh per kg of linen.

Contrary to the common belief that reducing water usage requires an increase in chemical usage for effective washing, Christeyns has proved otherwise. By combining innovative technologies such as filter systems (Lint-X range), highly efficient heat exchangers (Heat-X range) and precise dosing techniques (FLUX-range) with a different approach to chemistry, they have completely transformed the washing process.

A History of Innovation: Introducing “Cool Chemistry”

Through a groundbreaking approach in detergent formulation, Christeyns has developed a range of innovative products. One of these innovations is Cool Care, a main wash detergent that blends the best surfactants and enzymes for exceptional performance. Paired with a specially designed wash process and either Cool Brite (bleach for hospitality) or Cool Asepsis (disinfectant for healthcare), Cool Care forms the foundation of Christeyns’ “Cool Chemistry.” This innovative wash process was introduced in 2013 and has since revolutionized the industry.

Achieving Excellence at Lower Temperatures

The term “Cool Chemistry” stems from the concept of washing at lower temperatures. Cool Chemistry is specifically designed for linen in the hospitality, healthcare, and workwear sectors, delivering outstanding results in terms of soil removal, whiteness, bleaching, and disinfection even at temperatures as low as 40°C. How cool is that!

The Revolutionary Technology

The uniqueness of the Cool Chemistry concept lies in the on-site production of the bleaching agent Cool Brite and the disinfectant Cool Asepsis. With the assistance of Cool Box technology, the concentrated Cool Brite/Cool Asepsis components are precisely measured, combined with water, and directly integrated into the wash process. This eliminates the need for transportation of water resulting in a significant reduction of carbon emissions.  Plus, the on-site production also guarantees highly efficient and stable formulations. For laundries where space is limited, Christeyns developed a smaller device – Cool Box Lite – which fits small laundry spaces perfectly.

Thanks to Cool Box technology, the bleaching agent Cool Brite and the disinfectant Cool Asepsis are produced directly at the customer’s premises. This results in a saving of 25 million litres of water, which is equivalent to over 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Emphasizing Eco-friendliness: Eco-labelled Cool Chemistry

To underscore its ecological impact, Christeyns has developed the Cool Chemistry Green and Blue ranges, both awarded eco-label certifications. These eco-labelled Cool Chemistry variants offer the same flexibility as standard Cool Chemistry products, delivering excellent wash results between 40 and 60°C. The performance in terms of soil removal and whiteness remains exceptional compared to conventional processes, making them a sustainable choice.

The Cool Chemistry Green range for hospitality has been awarded the EU Ecolabel. This label helps consumers identify products and services that have a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle. From the extraction of raw materials to production, use, and disposal, the EU Ecolabel promotes and ensures environmental excellence. It is a trusted voluntary label recognized throughout Europe.

The Cool Chemistry Blue range features the Nordic Swan Ecolabel for hospitality and healthcare, which is the official Ecolabel for the Nordic countries. It is a voluntary and practical tool that empowers consumers to actively choose environmentally friendly products. As an ISO 14024 type 1 Ecolabelling system and a third-party control organ, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel ensures that products meet rigorous environmental and climate standards. The product’s life-cycle perspective is thoroughly analysed, considering its impact on the environment from raw material sourcing to waste management.

Unmatched Disinfection Capabilities

Healthcare laundries seeking to ensure impeccable hygiene for their linen can also rely on Cool Chemistry. Cool Chemistry has received recognition from the German Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and complies with European norms (EN1276,EN1650, EN13704, EN14476 and EN13727), providing outstanding and odourless disinfection even at 60°C.

Positive Impact on Textiles

The unique chemistry of Cool Chemistry offers additional benefits beyond excellent wash results. pH neutral, Cool Chemistry contains the most gentle of ingredients, which in combination with lower temperatures reduce chemical impact on textile fibres, extending their lifespan.

Cool Chemistry: Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future and Beyond

Since its introduction in 2013, Cool Chemistry has emerged as a cornerstone of sustainability. This was taken a step further in 2022 with the introduction of EPIC (Enzymatic Process Innovation by Christeyns). By combining new chemistry with innovative technology, Christeyns developed a detergent system that focuses on reducing wastewater pollution through enzyme technology.

EPIC is a versatile detergency system that seamlessly integrates with the existing Cool Chemistry concept. Upgrading from Cool Care to Cool EPIC, a highly concentrated new detergent, and utilizing the on-site EPIX technology allows for precise dosing of enzyme mixtures directly into the washing process.

This EPIX unit produces enzyme mixtures on-site and doses them very precisely and safely directly into the tunnel washer or washer extractor.

Stay Cool. Be EPIC!

For the more than 300 laundries currently using Cool Chemistry, EPIC offers a unique opportunity. Not only does it provide benefits such as neutral pH, lower temperatures, and exceptional detergency, but it also enables compliance with wastewater standards and lowers wastewater costs.
