Recycling – a vital practice for the sustainability of our planet

Recycling is a vital practice for the sustainability of our planet. It helps to preserve natural resources, reduce waste and minimise the environmental impact of our consumption. Recycling not only minimises the need for raw materials, but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and oceans. This not only helps to preserve ecological systems and wildlife, but also promotes a healthier environment for present and future generations.

At Christeyns, we are committed to continually improve our recycling efforts and integrate sustainable practices into our operations as a responsible business. Due to the nature of our industry, recycling has been a difficult journey, as we also have to ensure the safety of our products and people. However, it’s a work in progress, it requires creativity and persistence.

Our approach to recycling focuses on 3 main strategies: (1) avoiding packaging completely through buying and selling in bulk, but also through new washing techniques (less material to ship); (2) reusing packaging material; and (3) using (partially) recycled packaging material.

The waste hierarchy

Christeyns waste hierarchy

One of our key achievements is that 44% of our total output leaves our sites in bulk (no packaging), reused or (partially) recycled packaging. To measure is to know. Knowing where we stand in 2024 allows us to use this as a reference point and track our progress in the future, in our commitment to reducing waste and promoting the circular economy.

At Christeyns we pride ourselves on having continuous improvement as a core value. This means that we do not rest on our laurels and are always looking to improve and optimise our operations. The way is ahead and we roll up our sleeves and get on with it.
