Earth Overshoot Day 2024
Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s annual consumption of resources exceeds the Earth’s capacity to regenerate those resources in the same year. In 2024, this day will fall on 1 August. According to the Global Footprint Network, Earth Overshoot Day highlights the imbalance between human consumption and the planet’s ability to regenerate ecological resources and services. This overconsumption is based on the exhaustion of environmental reserves and the generation of waste, primarily atmospheric carbon dioxide.
As a responsible business, Christeyns is committed to developing strategies to minimise our ecological footprint, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG12): Sustainable consumption and production.
Responsible production
At Christeyns, the sustainability of production is being improved by maximising the efficiency of resources and minimising the destruction of goods through advanced technology and close collaboration with customers and suppliers. The use of renewable energy is increasing, along with the development of infrastructure to increase our own renewable energy capacity. In addition, our advanced energy-saving technologies are helping customers to significantly reduce their energy consumption.
Efficient management of water resources and investment in innovative solutions and equipment are in place to reduce the environmental footprint of manufacturing sites. Strategies are employed to optimise water use, recycle and reuse initiatives, and limit or eliminate wastewater generation.
Responsible consumption
Optimising waste management is a key priority, demonstrated by the careful sorting of recyclable materials and the preference for bulk purchases in IBCs over drums to facilitate reuse. This approach not only streamlines product distribution but also supports the principles of a circular economy.
As part of our commitment to responsible consumption, we extend our sustainability principles to our customers’ operations. We provide support and technology that not only helps them achieve maximum product efficiency with minimum waste through dosing systems, but also ensures that they promote water conservation and reduce energy consumption. These collaborative efforts underscore our commitment to environmental protection and resource conservation.
If you want to play an active role as a consumer, here are some simple actions that can have a significant impact:
Laundry: use colder water, shorter cycles, fuller loads and air-dry.
House Cleaning: Choose reusable cleaning cloths and use refillable detergents at the recommended dosage.
Dishes: Fill your dishwasher to the limit and run it outside peak hours – you’ll reduce peak demand on the grid… and you may be charged less.
Minimise food waste: Buy local and only what you need, store food wisely and freeze it for later, or use leftovers to make another meal.
Circular economy: Recycling, upcycling and minimising single-use plastics are essential.
If you want to learn more about sustainable living, The Sustainable Lifestyles Action Academy offers resources to help you change your behaviour.
Let’s adopt these strategies together, push back Earth Overshoot Day and live in balance with our planet.
