Team up for safety – Food Safety is a shared responsibility

Everyone has the right to safe, nutritious and sufficient food. There are over 130,000 food businesses in the UK and Ireland, making it one of the largest employers. Each of these have a legal responsibility to ensure food they provide is as safe as possible. Everybody has a role to play from farm to table to ensure the food we consume is safe and will not cause damages to our health.

World Food Safety Day will be celebrated on 7 June 2020, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),  Codex Member Countries and their partners to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development.  “Food safety, everyone’s business”, the action-oriented campaign will promote global food safety awareness and call upon countries and decision makers, the private sector, civil society, UN organizations and the general public to act.

  • Unsafe food takes a huge toll on human health and the economy, WHO estimates > 600 million people fall ill, 420 000 die every year from eating food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites, toxins or chemicals and the World Bank estimate of unsafe food costs US$ 95 billion in low-and middle-income economies
